Sanding wheels

An emery wheel is the old name for abrasive grinding tools. They are used for roughing, grinding, and sharpening. Various machines are typically used for this purpose. The tool is made from abrasive grit and binders. During the manufacturing process, the tool is pressed and then placed in a heat-treated oven.

Classification of grinding wheels is carried out according to the following criteria:

  • Configuration. They can be straight, cup-cylindrical, cup-conical, plate-shaped, etc.

  • The type of abrasive grain. Most often, this refers to various types of corundum.

  • Type of binding component (ceramics, bakelite, vulcanite).

  • Hardness. It comes in different grades and is selected depending on the characteristics of the material being processed.

  • Structure. It can be dense, open, porous, etc.

Products of this type are marked with the outer diameter, wheel height, and bore diameter, allowing for the selection of the most suitable tool for a specific production task. Grinding quality depends largely on the size of the abrasive grit.

The grains that make up the disk are:

  1. Very coarse (1600 microns and more).

  2. Coarse (800 – 1600 microns).

  3. Medium (250 – 630 microns).

  4. Thin (100 – 200 microns).

  5. Very thin (40 – 80 microns).

  6. Micro grains (less than 40 µm).

To rough up various parts and surfaces, use wheels with a coarse or medium coarseness. Medium-coarse wheels are primarily used for grinding. They can also be used for initial sharpening of tools. Fine finishing is performed with products with a fine or very fine grit. Micro-polishing powders can also be used for this purpose.
