A flap disc for a drill is a widely used auxiliary tool in construction and any type of renovation. It is used by both professionals and those who only perform simple DIY restoration work.
Surface sanding is a broad area of repair. Using removable attachments, you can perfectly sand concrete and plaster, all types of metal and wood, stone and abrasive materials, and polish glass and paint.

Types of nozzles used


A drill is a versatile and common tool. Its wide range of uses is determined by the wide variety of attachments available. Some models are secured with a key, while more recent tools feature quick-release heads. Attachments are available for a variety of applications. The following are available:

  • fan-shaped;
  • drums;
  • cup-shaped;
  • disk, etc.

An auxiliary block is typically a specialized, replaceable unit secured in a chuck. Blocks vary in size, surface characteristics, shape, and materials used.

Design Features

The flap disc for a drill gets its name from the fan-shaped arrangement of its working elements. The grinding disc is divided into segments along its entire circumference. This arrangement of elements ensures high flexibility and balance.

Another name for this tool is "fan wheels," which derives from its similarity in appearance to a well-known feminine accessory. This design significantly increases the contact area between the tool and the workpiece. A larger contact area means a higher quality finish. Fan wheels are of limited use when grinding the inner surfaces of cylindrical workpieces.

Structurally, a petal wheel is a working element with a solid (metal, or less commonly, wood) central core. Attached to the base are petals made of various materials (depending on their intended purpose). The elements can be mounted parallel to the base or formed into a single cylinder.

Technical specifications

Flap discs for drills are differentiated by their main technical parameters. The most important ones are:

  • node radius;
  • grain;
  • dimensions of block elements;
  • shank parameters.

The productivity of operations directly depends on the radius of the part. The limiting factor is the power of the primary tool. Drills are generally limited in size, so attachments are limited to a certain size. A common range is 60 to 80 mm. The wheel thickness is 20 mm. Grinding with a handheld unit is not very productive and is used for processing small parts.

Grit sizes are defined as fine, medium, and coarse (80, 60, 40). In technical documentation, they are designated by the letter "P" (imported equivalents are designated by the letter "N"). The number following the letter indicates the grain size. The higher the number, the smaller the diameter of the abrasive. The application is obvious: coarse grit is suitable for roughing, while fine grit is suitable for delicate processing.

The last two characteristics are not specifically reflected numerically in the documents. The wider the element, the faster the machining of workpieces. The shank corresponds to the bore diameter of the head.

What are the elements made of?

The material of the petals is selected for the specific task. For roughing and other rough work, the components are made of fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. Canvas fabric is also used as a base. The surface of the structure is coated with a uniform layer of electrocorundum.

Depending on the operations being performed, the petals are made from sandpaper of varying grain sizes.

These flap wheels are the most popular. They are made using abrasive-polymer and nylon materials.

Fine, delicate polishing is done with felt, foam rubber, sheepskin, or felt. Fur can be used to impart a shine to the wood. These tools apply a protective layer to the treated surfaces.

Nuances in work

Flap wheels are ideal for finishing wood surfaces. They are particularly effective when working on geometrically complex parts, such as overlapping structural elements, where a sander cannot be used.

The challenge when working with a drill is holding it at the right angle to the surface being worked on. Holding it suspended can cause radius marks. One advantage is the ability to adjust the rotation speed.
